How are pediatric sarcomas treated?

Treatment depends on the type, stage, location and size of the tumor, and may include:

  • Surgery to remove the tumor. Our surgeons are specialized in pediatric orthopedic oncology orthopedics and perform limb salvage procedures to remove tumors, while preserving the affected arms and legs. We also provide prosthesis fitting and training if needed.
  • Chemotherapy, a systemic medical treatment that goes throughout the body in search of tumor cells to kill, no matter where they are.
  • Radiation therapy, which may include intensity-modulated radiotherapy or proton therapy, which delivers high doses of radiation to control and manage cancer while significantly reducing damage to healthy tissue and vital organs. Miami Cancer Institute was among the first centers in the United States to offer this treatment.

Your child may also need:

  • Antibiotics to prevent or treat infections.
  • Rehabilitation, including physical and occupational therapy and psychosocial adaptation.
