As part of Miami Cancer Institute’s internationally recognized Radiation Oncology Program, our team of experts offers a non-surgical radiation treatment called Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, the most modern technology available, in South Florida’s only state-of-the-art Icon™ Gamma Knife Center.

Our radiation oncology specialists deliver Icon Gamma Knife Radiosurgery by using multiple radiation beams to target small, benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) lesions inside the brain. This treatment can also be used to treat other benign conditions, such as trigeminal neuralgia or arteriovenous malformations in the brain.

By harnessing 192 radioactive cobalt sources that focus gamma rays to the center of a brain lesion, the Institute’s team of specialists can deliver an intense dose of radiation while minimizing the risk of harm to surrounding tissues, arteries, nerves and other important areas in the brain. This outpatient treatment is typically delivered over a course of one to five treatments.

A unique option for some patients treated with Gamma Knife Radiosurgery at the Institute is non-invasive, outpatient treatments with the latest technology. Instead of the traditional frame-based approach (in which a precision frame is placed on a patient’s head prior to radiosurgery by a neurosurgeon), some patients may be candidates for a mask-based treatment, which enables the experts to provide continuous infrared monitoring along with CT imaging. This ensures that patients receive the most accurate cranial radiosurgery treatment available in the least invasive way possible.

To find out if Icon Gamma Knife Radiosurgery may be the right therapy for you, your Miami Cancer Institute team of experts will provide a comprehensive assessment and discuss with you which radiation therapy is best suited for your individual treatment needs.

Patients who receive Icon Gamma Knife Radiosurgery are treated in the state-of-the-art Grace Treatment Room, named to provide inspiration and hope to all patients.
