Living Beyond Cancer

Completing cancer treatment is an exciting time. But it may also be a stressful time. Many people find it hard to go from actively treating their disease to becoming a survivor moving on with life.

Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute’s Survivorship Program offers services to make your transition easier. The program emphasizes healing, recovery and wellness and is designed for people who show no evidence of disease after finishing treatment. It addresses:

  • Managing side effects of cancer and cancer therapies
  • Monitoring for cancer’s return
  • Preventing future cancers through healthy lifestyle behaviors
  • Screening for new cancer

Our Survivorship Services

Once you’ve completed your cancer treatment, you meet with a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant. They’ll work with you and your cancer care team to create a detailed and customized care plan. Our program provides:

  • A personalized cancer treatment summary and care plan for you, your primary care physician and your cancer care team
  • Assessment for cancer recurrence with scheduled surveillance visits and testing
  • Management of cancer-related side effects, both in the near-term and the future
  • Nutritional counseling referrals
  • Referrals to other specialists, such as cardiologists, pulmonologists, fertility specialists and genetic counselors, as needed
  • Screening referrals for other cancers
  • Survivorship exercise fitness program referrals

The Ringing of the Bell

A bright silver bell hangs in the lobby of Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. At the end of active treatment, you’re invited to ring the bell. This tradition was started by Rear Admiral Irve Le Moyne of the U.S. Navy, who was undergoing radiation for head and neck cancer. He was following a Navy tradition of ringing a bell to signify “when the job was done.” Today, nearly all cancer facilities have a similar bell that patients ring to mark the end of treatment.
